Air Canada has selected Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner as part of an ongoing effort to modernize and grow its fleet with an order for 18 new jets and an option to purchase 12 more. The carrier ordered 787-10 widebody Dreamliners, according to a news release. The value of the order was not disclosed. The flag carrier of the country, Air Canada will deploy the new fuel-efficient airplanes as part of its broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions while expanding its global route network, the news release said. Leidos , a Fortune 500 science and technology leader, today announced plans to establish a new South Carolina operation in Charleston County. The company’s $31.7 million investment will create up to 170 new jobs over time. The new facility will serve as a Manufacturing Center of Excellence for Leidos’ Security Enterprise Solutions (SES) operation. It will produce security systems for screening checked baggage, cargo and passengers. This new facility will enable the company to bring more manufacturing in-house, providing Leidos with greater control of its operations by reducing dependencies on external entities. An international manufacturing company has tapped Johnson City for its second location in the United States, bringing as many as 50 jobs and a $6.9 million investment to space formerly occupied by another German company on Wesinpar Drive. PVS Plastics Technology Corp. plans a five-year development of a vacant 54,000-square-foot building off West Market Street that previously served as a temporary manufacturing facility for Ebm-papst while that German fan manufacturing company constructed its 175,000-square-foot plant in the Washington County Industrial Park. Minor league baseball is returning to Spartanburg. The Down East Wood Ducks, a Low-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, are set to move to the Upstate from eastern North Carolina. “The impact it will have on this community, we can’t even say right now,” said Spartanburg Mayor Jerome Rice. “The sky is truly the limit. A new transportation option is launching between Nashville and Memphis. Vonlane , a luxury motor-coach service with routes in the Southern U.S., announced Monday it would offer a new daily route between the two Tennessee cities beginning May 26.
